The Doctor's Human Side!!

The physician who is more aware of his/her shortcomings, as a human being, acts in a more sincere & spontaneous manner before the patient.  Those who are more conscious  about their limitations, despite  the sense of "omnipotence"   around their medical profession, try to exercise EMPATHY & UNCONDITIONAL LOVE toward a person under his/her medical/surgical care.  Such physicians are willing to work on  the narcissistic aspects of their personalities, in order to treat each patient as an unique fellow being... and NOT as a number!!!  And the positive response to the  medical treatment tend to grow because the patient feels  that the doctor really cares about him/her.

Why to become a doctor?

What should motivate a person to become a physician?  The fundamental reason for one to get into the medical profession should be his/her extraordinary concern about Human Life.   Only when we are moved by these  special feelings toward our fellow beings, we qualify to the sacred mission to treat people.  This means to see every patient as a unique, special individual, and NOT as a number, or a laboratory piece, to be studied &  discarded. Those who only see the medical field as a profitable way to make a living should chose a different professional path.

The Doctor between Family/Work !!

It is very difficult to be an accomplished physician, a responsible, dedicated parent and a loving spouse, simultaneously. To combine these two sides, specially when it happens that the physician is a female requires a great deal of self-discipline, good physical, emotional health, and lots of determination. The time needs to be very well managed, in order to avoid a stressful professional life, and /or alienation of spouse & children as well. Being so, the medical profession is not for everyone because it is not only very demanding, but also it requires special skills, like renunciation, altruism & a sense of Compassion & Universal Love.

When the Doctor is a Patient!!

There is a pervasive misconception that physicians are not supposed to get ill. Of course, this is a false conception because doctors, like any other human being, also have the same physical, emotional, spiritual needs and limitations, as everybody else in this Planet. Even so, it is hard to admit that medical doctors may be alcoholics, dependents on controlled substances, or suffer from depression. And so on... This is to say the least! Fortunately there is the so-called "Impaired Physician's Society," an organization to assist physicians, dentists, veterinarians, psychologists, who are in need of professional assistance.

Patients are not "robots."

Physicians from all specialties should learn more about Human Communication, in order to improve their way to interact more effectively with their patients. Yes, because the Medical Schools are mainly concerned in treating "DISEASES," there is a tendency to leave those who are ill, the PATIENTS, in a secondary position, as simple spectators. As a consequence, the physician interacts with him/her mechanically, ignoring that the patients (also) have feelings, needs, fears, worries, etc., like any other human being. So it is about time to change, to REHUMANIZE the Medical Profession.

Physicians and their Families

It is not easy to combine a successful medical practice  with the demanding  aspects from the doctor's family.  This is extremely much more difficult for female physicians, who happen to be mothers and wives.  And sometimes  single mothers!!

It requires a great deal of  self-discipline, emotional balance and a good physical health as well.  Everything needs to be done  to avoid  experiencing  a stressful  professional  life, trying to limit the number of patients to be treated daily.  Thus for the physician to have quality time  to well assist and nurture his/her family, at the same times he/she is (also) in a position to provide responsible  and loving care to the patients.

Malpractice suits and Doctor's work.

The great increase in the number of legal actions against physicians is one of the factors that may contribute for the doctor to act ( consciously or unconsciously ) defensively toward his/her patient. In doing so, the physician tends to deal with the person under his care in a more mechanical manner, and with less spontaneity, in order to protect his/her credibility. This for sure affects the quality of this very important communication! C.R.
